Good short article about the current FRANS HALS show at the Rijks Museum! I admire Hals in the same way I admire another great portrait artist, Jacques Louis David: they capture something of the personality of the sitter in the portrait; they're timeless. Many portraits look dated, and I don't mean the fashion. I mean they have a certain generic look, but Hals, with his deft brushstrokes captures a glimpse of the actual person. The article makes him seem so far behind Rembrandt, but personally, I'll stare at a Hals much longer and it enjoy it more than a Rembrandt
